Plan to merge Huangpu, Luwan districts approved

CHINA'S central government has approved Shanghai's plan to merge its Luwan District with Huangpu District to create a larger Huangpu District, officials said today.

Currently, Huangpu district covers 12.49 square kilometers of land in the heart of the city, including the historical Bund area. Its registered population reached 607,405 at the end of 2008.

Luwan District, located in the former French Concession with an area of 8.03 square kilometers, boasts the stylish Huaihai Road M. It is home to 310,100 registered residents.
