Planners don鈥檛 lack ideas to revamp city landmarks

A global competition has given the city’s top planners a choice of designs for redeveloping several downtown landmarks.
The competition invited both professional and amateur designers to redevelop Xujiahui and Hengshan-Fuxing roads in Xuhui District and Zhangjiang High-tech Park in Pudong New Area.
The Shanghai Stadium and Shanghai Gymnasium along with a nearby swimming pool and other sports facilities will be redeveloped into Xujiahui Sports Park, according to the Shanghai Planning, Land and Resources Administration.
The Hengshan-Fuxing Road Historic Reservation Area project will have a pedestrian passage running along historic villas and former residences of celebrities, while the Northwest Zhangjiang Hi-tech Park project aims to build a Technological Business Community for innovative professionals to work, study and live, according to the administration.
It launched the global campaign entitled “2016 Shanghai Urban Design Challenge,” in August, inviting professional designers and amateurs to design the projects.
This was the first time that the city’s planning authority sought ideas from both professionals and the public.
“Though most of the works cannot be carried out directly, they involve public opinion and ideas on how to make these landmarks better public spaces for local citizens,” said Su Gongzhou, the retired chief engineer with Shanghai Urban Planning and Design Research Institute and one of the experts called in to redevelop the landmarks.
In one of the winning designs, designer Zhang Mao worked out a blueprint for Xujiahui Sports Park to involve fountains, a “water movie screen” and aquatic performance stages near Shanghai Stadium and Shanghai Gymnasium.
“I think the downtown park should also be an ecological garden and a cultural park,”said Zhang, who won the first prize for the design competition for the sports park. He divided the park into different sections for exercises, training, basketball, tennis, football, extreme sports, as well as for parents, children and enjoying food. A lake, along with gardens of lavender, peony, rose and cherry flowers, are featured in the design.
The plans include a 2-story pedestrian skywalk for jogging around the park that connects the stadiums and other structures.
