Plans to expand senior card benefits

THE city is looking into expanding the use of senior cards — a type of bank debit card that is credited monthly — to give more preferential treatments to Shanghai’s senior citizens.
Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau conducted a survey this month among elderly people.
“Hospitals, scenic spots and banks are the top three areas that seniors want the expansion of senior card function to cover,” said Jiang Rui, deputy director of the bureau.
Shanghai started implementing a comprehensive senior subsidy policy last May.
Recipients are classified into five age groups. Those between 65 and 69 receive a monthly subsidy of 75 yuan (US$11), those aged 70-79 get 150 yuan, octogenarians receive 180 yuan, nonagenarians 350 yuan, and centenarians 600 yuan. Each card is linked to one of six commercial banks.
The number of permanent residents aged 60 or older in Shanghai is forecast to climb to 5.3 million by 2020.
