Plenty of choice to usher in the new year
BELL tolling, climbing and running are among a variety of events that will usher in the new year to Shanghai.
Longhua Temple in Xuhui District will host its traditional bell-tolling ceremony at midnight on the New Year’s Eve.
A bronze bell will be struck 108 times to absolve sins and bring good luck. It is believed striking bells this number of times can eliminate grief and worry.
Baohua Temple and Donglin Temple, both in Jinshan District, will host bell-tolling events as well as tea ceremonies and guqin performances, Shanghai Tourism Administration said.
The landmark Oriental Pearl TV Tower in the Pudong New Area will host its annual traditional climbing and healthy run event on the New Year’s Day. In China, it is a tradition to ascend high on the day because it is believed to bring good luck and to signify a good start.
A climbing event will also be held on Sheshan Hill in Songjiang District on January 1.
Shanghai Botanical Garden in Xuhui will host a wood sorrel exhibition during the three-day New Year holiday, with about 120 varieties of plants on display, while the Shanghai Happy Valley in Songjiang will present firework shows on the New Year’s Eve and the New Year’s Day, with the amusement park lit by an estimated 10 million lights.
Meanwhile, travel agencies said domestic destinations with good air quality and warm weather were likely preferred destinations for tourists during the three-day holiday.
With most areas in east and north China suffering choking weather this winter, many people are eager to flee to unpolluted places to breathe pure air quality, said the online travel operator Tongcheng. Xiamen, Sanya, Guilin and Kunming are some of the most popular domestic destinations for their clean air and warm temperature, it said.
Snowy destinations were also popular choices among Shanghai residents during the holiday, travel agencies said.
