Poacher, fisherman sentenced
A POACHER who poisoned 24 protected birds and attempted to sell them to restaurants in the Pudong New Area was jailed for seven months by the Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court.
Prosecutors said the man, surnamed Qiang, poached in a bird preserve from December 4-6, 2012, and poisoned 24 birds, including two mallards, two gadwalls, seven green-winged teals and 13 spot-billed ducks. These species are protected in China.
Police caught him on December 6, 2012, when he was on his way to restaurants to sell them.
In another case heard by the Jiading District People’s Court, a man was fined 3,000 yuan (US$493) for illegal fishing.
The man, surnamed Xie, was an unlicensed fisherman who caught fish in creeks illegally in 2011 during the close season. He used storage battery, inverter and other tools to catch fish. Using electric shock to catch fish can endanger human lives and environment.
