Police catch fugitive at city airport
A COMMERCIAL fraud suspect from Taiwan who had fled to Canada was caught in Shanghai last month, the city’s entry-exit frontier inspection police said yesterday.
The suspect, Lien Tai-Shen, arrived at Pudong International Airport on April 26, police said.
According to police, he defrauded his business partner in Shanghai out of US$664,000 in 2006.
Officers used a face-matching computer program in March and discovered that Lien had obtained a Canadian passport under the name Liang Yun-Fei. He had flown in and out of Shanghai several times under the false name, police said.
Lien was caught as part of operation Fox Hunt 2015, an international manhunt for suspects allegedly involved in economic crimes or corruption cases. Officers said Lien was the 27th suspect caught at the city’s airports since 2014 after they had escaped from China and assumed a new identity.
