Police detain 300 telephone scam suspects

MORE than 300 people linked to 400 telephone scams were detained in the three months through February, city police said yesterday.

A crackdown on the activity also led to the closure of 22 scamming networks across the city, they said.

In the first two months of the year, the number of reports of telephone scams fell 23 percent. But despite the encouraging figures, police remain concerned about telephone-based scams, many of which are linked to online shopping, they said.

Last July, a woman surnamed Zhu received a text message after buying a bracelet online saying the item was out of stock. She was told that to get a refund she had to call the number in the message. When she did so, a person posing as a customer services representative asked her to provide her credit card and ID numbers.

But instead of receiving a refund, Zhu was contacted by her bank, which told her 3,910 yuan (US$631) had been debited from her account.

Police said people should never give out their personal or credit card information to cold callers.
