Police get tough on bad drivers
POLICE in Shanghai recorded more than 2 million traffic violations during a three-month crackdown that ended last month.
About half were spotted by surveillance cameras, the authorities said.
Of the 1 million violations identified by officers at the scene, 677,000 happened at major intersections.
Running red lights and switching lanes when entering a junction were the most common misdemeanors.
Other violations included entering an already congested junction on a green light.
Between November and January, surveillance cameras spotted 719 drivers blocking traffic at crossroad junctions, each of whom will be given a 200 yuan (US$32) fine and have two points deducted from their license, police said.
More surveillance cameras will be installed later in the year to help catch drivers using bus-only lanes.
