Police nab 32 suspects, seize 2.4 million yuan in online gambling network
A citywide online soccer gambling network has been smashed by local police, with 32 members caught, more than 2.4 million yuan (US$386,400) in bets seized and 12 bank accounts frozen, authorities said today.
Shanghai police were alerted to the network in February and later found the chief members had started obtaining accounts from overseas gambling websites in 2013. The three network organizers, all in their 40s and 50s, served as these foreign sites' domestic agents and employed others to lure online gamblers, police said.
Eleven chief members of the network were detained, with another three released on bail. The rest were given administrative penalties (fines or administrative detention, different from criminal detention which was followed by a trial).
This year local police tackled 42 online gambling cases. Some 13.6 million yuan in bets were seized with 74 bank accounts involved, police said.
