Police nab Metro fire starter

A 20-year-old man has been detained for playing with fire on a Metro train, Shanghai police said yesterday.

The man, surnamed Liu, claimed that he set fire to a Metro map “just for fun,” police said. Liu is under detention on suspicion of “endangering public safety with dangerous methods.”

Metro police investigated the matter after receiving a report on June 30 that a man set a piece of paper on fire several times while riding a Metro Line 4 train.

From a surveillance camera inside the carriage, police spotted the man between Zhenping Road and Shanghai Railway Station stations about 12:25pm.

The paper caught fire and the man shook it to put it out, footage shows. Police tracked the man to a FamilyMart convenience store and determined his identity from his store membership card.

Police said Liu had no criminal record and no history of mental illness.
