Police nab hacker in Chengdu
SHANGHAI police caught a man in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, who had hacked into the website of a hotel chain and stole users’ credit information and money deposits, police said yesterday.
The man, surnamed Wu, had stolen 46,000 yuan (US$7,345) worth of loyalty credits and more than 6,000 yuan deposits, police said. Wu sold the 1.73 million credits to others on the Internet chat rooms at 100 yuan per 100,000 credits, which can be used for discounts. After receiving several complaints from customers about their disappearing credits, the hotel chain reported the matter to the police late last year. Police said after they traced Wu to Chengdu they found the hacking software on his computer at home.
