Police officer slashed in face while tackling knifeman

A POLICE officer had his face slashed and suffered a fractured eye socket when he tackled a knife-wielding drunk in a hotel lobby.

Police officer Zhu Yijia was driving along Zhongshan Road on patrol late on Monday when he was flagged down by a pedestrian and told that a man was threatening people on the street.

Zhu called for support and officers cornered the man, who was holding a kitchen knife in each hand, in front of an elevator in the lobby of a hotel.

As officers tried to negotiate with him, the door of the elevator suddenly opened and guests emerged, one of whom tried to disarm the man, surveillance camera footage showed.

When Zhu intervened, he was attacked.

The 31-year-old officer was rushed to Shanghai No. 1 People’s Hospital. He required treatment for a fractured eye socket and 20 stitches for a 10-centimeter gash to his right cheek.

No one else was injured.

The suspect, a 47-year-old Liaoning Province native surnamed Ji, was said to be very drunk after a gathering with friends at a nearby KTV.

Surveillance footage showed him going into a store, picking up two knives and threatening pedestrians.
