Police officers injured after family attacks them following scuffle with demolition team

THREE residents in a building to be demolished in downtown Shanghai injured a few police officers and on-lookers with "corrosive liquid" after a scuffle with people from a demolition company yesterday afternoon, Shanghai police said in a statement on Friday morning.

Police said they received a call from the company at about 1:45pm, which claimed that their staff were attacked by a resident surnamed Han and his family with a catapult and steel pellets in the residential building on Anyuan Road in Jing'an District.

The staff were from the demolition company of Xinjing'an Group, a real estate developer. They were clearing the second and the fourth floor of the building when Han and his family, who live on the third floor, attacked them, according to the police.

The three residents turned against the police when police officers from Jing'an District arrived on the scene, throwing bricks and bottles at them and turning on gas from time to time, police said.

A woman from the family set fire to a gas tank and threw it to the second floor at about 6:20pm.

The police extinguished the fire immediately.

Shortly after, the three started to wield kitchen knives and sprinkle the corrosive liquid at the police and injured a few, according to the statement.

At this point they were subdued by the police.

Police said those who were injured in the incident were later treated in a hospital, but didn't reveal the number of the injured.

They said investigation is continuing.
