Police warn against 鈥榝ree pets鈥 scam

ANIMAL lovers are being warned not to believe everything they read on the Internet, after several people were duped by the operators of a pet adoption scam, Shanghai Morning Post reported yesterday.
Since last month, police have received numerous complaints from people claiming to have been offered pets for adoption on the condition they cover the cost of transporting them.
In one case, a woman surnamed Jiang responded to an online ad offering a 3-month-old Exotic Shorthair kitten for adoption, the report said.
Jiang contacted the “owner” via QQ, who told her that she would arrange for the cat to be transported from her hometown in Guangdong Province, as long as Jiang covered the cost.
Jiang agreed and transferred 600 yuan (US$98) to a bank account the woman said belonged to the transportation firm.
The kitten, however, has yet to materialize.
