Pollutant monitoring scanner for Jinshan’s chemical plants
A MONITORING system to check emission of chemical pollutants is coming up in Jinshan District, Hu Weiguo, governor of the district, said in a radio interview yesterday.
Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, are organic chemicals that are dangerous to human health and harms the environment. Industrial emissions and vehicle tail gas are the two major sources of VOCs.
Suburban Jinshan is home to a bustling chemical industry and has been targeted by the city government in its anti-pollution efforts. Hu said it will take two years to build the monitoring system. He said detectors will be installed around the chemical companies. It will provide real time information like the density of VOCs emissions. When the density surpasses a set standard, the factories will be asked to suspend operation.
Hu said 30 detectors had been installed at six major chemical factories. Another 30 more factories will be incorporated into the system this year.
Among them are Shanghai Shisi Chemical Product Company and Shanghai High Victory Fine Chemical Company. The two companies manufacture paint, plastics, synthetic resin and ink. Hu said the monitoring center will maintain a logbook of each company to keep track of them.
Hu was talking in a radio program to communicate with citizens about district affairs. He said a three-year environment renovation plan was already underway in the district since last year.
In the past 18 months, 72 heavy polluting enterprises had been shut down. Renovations were carried out over waste discharge in 49 firms. About 1.66 million square meters of illegal constructions were pulled down and 2.3 million square meters of forest cover were built.
