Polluter compensates companies

TWO companies and a neighborhood association victimized by pollution were compensated 39,400 yuan (US$6,252) after local prosecutors suggested they file lawsuits.

The convicted polluter, surnamed Gu, who is still serving his sentence, was under a civil trial at the Qingpu Detention house and agreed to an out-of-court settlement to pay 5,400 yuan in compensation to Xiayang neighborhood in Qingpu District for causing serious pollution. The two companies, which were involved with maintaining and inspecting the affected waterway and its surrounding area, received the remaining 34,000 yuan, which was paid by Gu's wife.

Prosecutors said Gu registered a trade company in April 2010 to sell chemical products, raw materials and diesel oil. On April 11 last year, Gu flushed the residue of waste oil into a sewer that led to a river, causing pollution and public financial losses that officials pegged at more than 380,000 yuan.
