Polluting firm forced to shut down after hefty fine
A CEMENT company in Baoshan District was forced to pull down the shutters after being slapped with a fine of over 1-million-yuan for causing pollution.
This is the first time a company has been fined over 1 million yuan since the new environmental protection law was introduced earlier this year. The new law states the fines will multiply if companies fail to take corrective measures.
State-owned Shanghai Baoshan Southern Cement Company on Yunchuan Road was warned in March for seriously affecting the environment by releasing dust particles. The district’s environmental protection bureau carried out a second inspection on May 14 and found that the company had failed to plug the discharge and promptly fined it 1.176 million yuan (US$189,454). Hit with the additional financial burden, the company decided to shut down at the end of last month.
Local residents had been complaining about dust from the company for years. It also worsened the streets after the rains. The Baoshan District Environmental Protection Bureau said the company had been warned several times but it did not upgrade its facilities to control the dust pollutants.
The new law allowed the authorities to hit with stricter penalties.
The inspection team said it visited the plant at the end of March and fined the company 42,000 yuan with a warning that it needed to take pollution controlling measures.
But the bureau found it had not followed the orders when it made a second visit on May 14. The company was then fined 1.176 million yuan.
Baoshan Cement decided to shut down the plant temporarily to avoid any further penalties until it upgraded the plant.
