Polluting vehicles to be forced off roads
HEAVILY polluting vehicles will be banned from the city’s roads from October 1, Shanghai’s transport commission said yesterday.
The city has eliminated 56,800 vehicles including 41,500 yellow label vehicles by the end of August. Another 15,300 old vehicles were also forced off the roads.
But there are still about 51,000 yellow-label vehicles, or heavily polluting vehicles, on the city roads. The transport commission said it will crack down on polluting vehicles running illegally in the city.
Diesel trucks that come under China III emission standard are also a major source of pollution. The commission said the running hours for these vehicles within the middle ring road will be restricted between 1am to 6am from November 1.
Shanghai has about 2.6 million cars, from which 4 percent, or 104,000 of them are made under the China III standard. However, about 40 percent of nitric oxide and 50 percent particulate matter of the city’s motor vehicle pollution are caused by them.
