Polygamist with 7 kids by 6 women gets prison

A FORMER public servant who had seven children with six women was sentenced to 18 months in prison for polygamy, the Pudong New Area People's Court said yesterday.

The 47-year-old man, a Jiangsu Province native surnamed Ji, lied to the women, telling them he was a senior bank executive, the court heard.

He was caught after one of his "wives" discovered he had other women and reported him to police.

Prosecutors said Ji married three of the women in Shanghai, Beijing and Jiangsu Province and lived with three other women at the same time. His oldest child is 23 years old while the youngest is two years old.

"I regret deeply what I have done and I am so sorry to these women," Ji said in court. He confessed to polygamy but argued that he had not planned to have children with them, the court heard.

"I married them only because the children needed a hukou," Ji said, referring to the important household registry needed to access services.

Polygamy offenders can be sentenced to up to two years in prison, according to law.
