Popular Sheyang rice often faked in Shanghai
SHEYANG rice produced in neighboring Jiangsu Province, one of the most popular varieties in Shanghai, is plagued by counterfeit products in the city market.
Sheyang Rice Association representatives said yesterday that they found about 160 companies selling fake Sheyang rice in the city, much of it substandard and produced by unlicensed workshops.
Zhang Changli, director of the association, said every year about 300,000 tons of real Sheyang rice is sold in Shanghai, occupying about 15 percent of the market share in the city.
"With the rising reputation of Sheyang rice, counterfeits mushroomed and are difficult to stop," Zhang said. "The fake Sheyang rice sellers frame up plant names or use the plant names that have been canceled to convince consumers that the rice they sell is genuinely produced in Sheyang."
He said that 36 companies were found to copy the actual brand design of real Sheyang rice companies.
The fake rice issue first surfaced in 2009, when the association found that every year more than 800,000 tons of fake Sheyang rice were sold in the city, near three times the quantity of the real thing. The fake product is sometimes made from rice that has been stocked for years. To make it taste fresh, producers add food additives or even non-edible chemicals to the rice.
