Popular bears rich in vitamins recalled

LOCAL doctors have warned that a vitamin-rich gummy bear for children which is popular among Shanghai’s parents through haitao — direct purchasing of overseas products online — has potential health hazards, after it was recalled in Canada for containing excessive levels of vitamin D.

Church and Dwight Canada Co, in consultation with Health Canada, is recalling all batches of “L’il Critters Vitamin D3” after the company’s testing identified levels of vitamin D in excess of that indicated on the product label, an announcement on Health Canada’s website last Thursday said.

Health Canada said the product tested contained almost four times the level of vitamin D indicated on its label — providing more than the recommended daily upper intake for children up to 8 years old.

Excessive intake of vitamin D daily by children under 8 can lead to headaches, dizziness, vomiting, loss of appetite, allergy and loss of weight, warned Dr Tang Xiaopeng from Renai Hospital’s pediatrics department.

Tang said many children don’t get sufficient vitamin D, which is available through exposure to sunlight and from some foods.

On online shopping giant Taobao.com, the gummy bears are sold for 100 yuan (US$16) to 200 yuan, with most of them purchased in the United States and Canada.

Some local mothers say they are now shunning the gum candy.

“I bought one bottle with 200 candies for my son, and he had almost half of them,” Zhou Lin, mother of a 4-year-old boy said.

“And although there is no recall triggered in the US, I have decided to drop it,” Zhou said.
