Precautions taken for downtown passage
THE city’s major tap water operator organized a volunteer team over the weekend to ensure the water supply, flood prevention and safeguard the environment during the construction of a major thoroughfare in downtown.
More than 190 engineers with Shanghai Chengtou Group will begin inspecting the water quality at the residential neighborhoods and office buildings up to 300 meters away from the construction sites of the Beiheng Passage, the group said.
They will also handle any water outage that might occur during the construction on the passage, a 19.1-kilometer road linking Changning, Putuo, Jing’an, Huangpu, Hongkou and Yangpu districts. The project is due to be finished by the end of 2019.
The ongoing construction on the passage is likely to affect both residents and traffic, an official with the group said. The passage includes underground tunnels, ground and elevated roads.
However, upon its completion, it is expected to largely improve downtown traffic and reduce congestion.
About 200 engineers with the group’s flood prevention department are standing by at low-lying areas near the construction sites to handle any emergent flood accidents during the flood season, which began on June 1.
The group’s environment protection team will inspect the air quality to check no flying dust or fine particles are flying into the residential areas during construction.
Team members will also educate and train residents on the garbage sorting.
