Price guide to counter tour rip-offs

SHANGHAI’S tourism association has released a recommended price guide for the city’s most popular itineraries as a reference for tourists.

The move that comes soon after nine online travel operators were criticized by China’s top tourism watchdog recently for luring customers with unreasonably low priced or even free deals.

“The price guide is updated quarterly because the prices of tour packages fluctuate in different seasons,” said Jin Bingwen, deputy secretary-general of the travel agency sub-branch with the Shanghai Tourism Industry Association.

The price guide is based on the prices of hundreds of tour packages with the same routes that are organized by licensed travel agencies, and travelers should be “vigilant if tours are priced much lower than the recommended,” said Jin.

“We pick some popular routes like one-day sightseeing of the city, the Disney Resort and neighboring water towns because they are the first choices of most travelers to Shanghai,” he said.

The recommended price for a one-day Shanghai sightseeing trip that includes a visit to the Shanghai Oriental Pearl Tower and the Yuyuan Garden, a cruise tour on the Huangpu River and a walk in Lujiazui financial area and the Bund is 280-320 yuan (US$42-47) per person. There is no shopping in the package.

The price guide also covers tours to neighboring cities like Suzhou, Wuxi and Hangzhou.

A one-day trip to Suzhou in Jiangsu Province from Shanghai with stops of Zhuozheng Garden, Lion Forest Garden, Hanshan Temple, Shantang Street, Tiger Hill and a cruise tour is priced between 350 yuan and 400 yuan per person. The guide can be checked on cats.org.cn/offer/index.

This month, nine online operators removed more than 800 tour packages after they were criticized by the China National Tourism Administration for organizing unreasonably low-priced or even free trips and then hitting tourists with “extras.”
