Primary schoolchildren struck down by norovirus

NOROVIRUS was to blame for 45 students at Shanghai Tongyuan Experimental Primary School in Jing’an District vomiting from last Friday to Sunday, local educational authorities said.
Nineteen of the students went to Shanghai No.10 People’s Hospital for treatment on Friday evening after vomiting twice or more, said the district education bureau.
By noon on Sunday, the number of sick students had risen to a final tally of 45.
The students are first and second graders (7 or 8 years old), whose classrooms are all on the third and fourth floors of the same teaching building at the school.
Disease control center and market supervision authorities in the district arrived at the school on Friday evening and collected samples of student lunches on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday as well as the appliances used.
They also collected swabs from faculty and sick students for lab tests.
Primary test found Norovirus in 10 of the 13 swab samples. Bacterial test results will be known in two weeks and further investigation is underway.
The school has now disinfected the entire campus. The education bureau has also organized a meeting at the school to enhance efforts in prevention and control of epidemic diseases.
Norovirus is highly contagious and has an incubation period of between 12 and 72 hours. It is a major cause of gastroenteritis and symptoms of infection include fever, vomiting and diarrhea.
People infected usually recover within a few days.
