Prison for man who stole from friend

A jobless Hong Kong citizen who stole nearly 950,000 yuan (US$137,730) from his Taiwanese friend has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for theft.

Jing’an District People’s Court said the defendant, surnamed Cheung, 35, had moved to Shanghai after graduating from a university in Canada.

A few years ago, he met a businessman from Taiwan, surnamed Wu, and the two became good friends.

After that, every time Wu flew to Shanghai, Cheung would accompany him, the court said.

But later Cheung’s company in Shanghai went bankrupt and he lost his job.

Instead of trying to find another, he came up with the idea to take money from Wu.

He managed to obtain the password of Wu’s bankcard when Wu was drunk.

Between March and August 2016, he used opportunities when Wu had had too much to drink to transfer 950,000 yuan to his own account, the court said.

Wu was alerted by his bank of large withdrawals from his account, and went to the police.

Cheung was caught in Shanghai last October.
