Probe into toxic Botox injections
AN investigation has been launched after four women suffered serious toxic reactions to Botox injections at unlicensed beauty parlors, health officials said yesterday.
The victims were treated over the past month at Ruijin Hospital when they experienced muscle weakness, breathing difficulties and problems swallowing after being injected with the South Korean product, which has not been approved for use in China.
“It is the first time that this many serious poisoning cases resulting from Botox injection have been handled here within a month,” said the hospital’s Dr Chen Xiaoying.
Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital and Shanghai Huashan Hospital have also treated patients suffering similar symptoms after Botox injections.
The China Food and Drug Administration suspects the Botox, which is used to eliminate wrinkles, was part of the same batch from South Korea.
Chinese beauty parlors are not licensed to administer Botox, which can cause paralysis and even death when not used properly.
