Probe launched into allegation that garbage shipments from city were being dumped at Suzhou island

AUTHORITIES in Shanghai and Suzhou have launched a joint investigation following reports that about 4,000 tons of garbage was transported secretly from Shanghai to the Xishan Island in Taihu Lake area, officials said today.

Eight ships carrying about 4,000 tons of garbage docked at the wharf of the Taihu drug rehabilitation center on Friday afternoon, and the garbage was about to be dumped at the abandoned embankment of the center, Xinhua news agency reported today, citing the Suzhou Taihu National Tourism Vacation Zone's administrative committee, which hosted a press conference yesterday about this incident.

The eight ships were reported to be seized by maritime authorities at the scene.

The garbage were suspected to be domestic garbage mixed with construction wastes, and the ships were from Jiading District, Xinhua said, citing local authorities.

The water quality near the dumping area has been tested, and no pollution was found.

Ship owners said the garbage was carried by trucks to their ships in Jiading before being transported to the Xishan Island, and the garbage would be collected by a construction company doing construction work nearby for pavement, according to the report.

Ship owners and intermediaries handling garbage transportation are being investigated by police, Xinhua reported.

The construction company is being investigated as well.

Those who involve in the incident will be severely punished once investigation finishes and a thorough self0check has been ordered for Shanghai's construction garbage management industry, the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau said today.

The bureau has established a team to cooperate with Suzhou police and local authorities in investigation.
