Probe launched into placenta pills

A MAN is under investigation on suspicion of selling human placenta in capsule form as a health supplement, the city’s market supervision bureau said yesterday.
The allegations came to light on Monday, when Shanghai TV broadcast a report in which an undercover journalist posed as a buyer for the product.
“A joint investigation was launched on Monday night after we saw the report on TV,” a bureau official surnamed Huang told Shanghai Daily.
“The police, health authority and officials with Gaohang Town went to (the suspect’s home on) Jufeng Road immediately after we heard the news,” he said.
Huang confirmed the identity of a man surnamed Liu who was featured in the TV report, but declined to provide and further information about the case.
He said only that an investigation is “ongoing and no conclusions have been made so far.”
When contacted by Shanghai Daily, an officer with Pudong police declined to comment on the allegations.
The TV report claimed that Liu — whom it described only as a retiree of a disease control and prevention center outside Shanghai — had offered to sell 120 placenta capsules for 1,000 yuan (US$154).
It also alleged that Liu purchased about a dozen placentas a month from unnamed hospitals, which he used to make the capsules.
Practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine claim that eating human placenta can improve blood circulation and boost the body’s immune system.
Under Chinese law, a placenta is deemed to be the property of the baby’s mother. If it is not wanted, it is generally the job of the hospital or clinic to dispose of it, but they are not allowed to sell it on to a third party.
