Project to tackle village sewage problem

JIADING District will install underground pipelines and create artificial wetlands to treat sewage from the city’s outlying villages, where most waste water is being discharged into rivers directly, officials said yesterday.
The district government will install 104 kilometers of sewage pipes by the end of the year and create six artificial wetlands containing plants and microbes that can purify waste water. A wetland covering 300 square meters can treat over 30 cubic meters of sewage daily.
After the completion of the district government-funded project, which will cost 100 million yuan (US$15 million), sewage from over 3,000 village households will be collected and purified to prevent it from polluting rivers, said Li Aiming, a senior engineer with the district water authority.
“Most of the villagers are discharging waste water to nearby rivers directly, which heavily pollutes the environment,” said Li.
Nearly all of Jiading’s surface water is below grade 5, which is the worst quality level, according to officials.
Work on the project will begin at Caowang Village by the end of the month and be extended to 18 other villages later this year, Li added.
