Property firm loses its appeal
A PROPERTY management company has lost its appeal against a court ruling that deemed it partially liable for a compensation payment to the family of a child who was stabbed to death at one of its compounds.
At an initial trial at the Pudong New Area People’s Court, the company, which was not named, was ordered by to pay 20 percent of the 1 million yuan (US$154,000) awarded to the family of a 12-year-old boy who was fatally attacked on September 12, 2014.
His assailant was later determined to be mentally ill.
The Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court, which heard the appeal, yesterday upheld the decision, saying that security guards at the residential compound failed in their duty to save the boy from the knife-wielding attacker.
It did not elaborate.
The original case was brought by the victim’s parents, who sued both the attacker and the property management firm.
