Public video traffic violations

MORE than 1,700 videos of traffic violations shot by mobile phones were uploaded to the Shanghai Traffic Police app within a two-week period, police said yesterday.
The app was launched last month.
More than half concerned illegal parking and unlawful lane-changing, which had respectively 538 and 367 reports. Other offenses reported included vehicles using bike and bus-only lanes and driving in the wrong lanes.
Police also encourage people to use the app to report littering from vehicles.
The app allows users to submit videos less than 30 seconds long with required information such as the location and time of the offense and the plate number of the car involved. The option is available only in Chinese.
Police said they had been reviewing the submitted evidence and handing out tickets.
The city’s new road and traffic management law encourages the police to take advantage of “advanced technologies,” such as drones, in law enforcement and traffic management.
In suburban Qingpu District, police for the first time used a drone to monitor road traffic and parking lots around dongzhi, or winter solstice, last month. Hundreds of thousands of people went “tomb-sweeping” graveyards in the district to pay respects to ancestors. Police said the drone was a “great help.”
