Pudong airport suspended from opening new flights after teen plane stowaway case

CHINA'S civil aviation regulator has suspended the Pudong International Airport from applying for new, extra or charter flights after a Chinese teenager had successfully stowed away on an Airbus A380 to Dubai from the Pudong airport.

The Civil Aviation Administration of China has also decided to take a flying safety evaluation on the airport and the applications will be halted till the end of the evaluation, the administration said on its official website.

It also imposed an "administrative punishment" on the Shanghai Airport Authority.

"The incident has caused severe and abominable influence," said Li Jian, deputy director with the administration. He said though no one was injured, it involves serious flying safety risks at the airport.

The 16-year-old, surnamed Xu, from southwest China’s Sichuan Province, snuck into the cargo hold of Emirates flight EK303, which took off on May 26 from the Pudong airport.

Xu climbed onto a tree and jumped into the apron of the airport and passed through the restricted area to enter the cargo hold of the aircraft without being noticed, the administration announced after an investigation.

The airport authority declined to comment on the penalty today but said it had upgraded the security level at the Pudong airport after a gambler set off a homemade bomb at the airport last week.
