Pudong court gives man 3-year sentence for fraud
A man who used blank checks to defraud 134,000 yuan (US$21,243) from two Shanghai companies was sentenced to three years in prison, the Pudong New Area People's Court said today.
The convict surnamed Jiang surrendered himself to police last May and returned all his illegal money to the victims after he had been on the run for four years, the court said.
The Fujian Province native said he picked up the blank checks when taking a bus home for the Chinese New Year in early 2007. During the holiday, Jiang ran up debts of more than 200,000 yuan in gambling and decided to use the blank checks to pay his debts.
When Jiang returned to Shanghai, he ordered goods from two construction companies and paid them with the checks, prosecutors said.
He was put on the wanted list after the two companies reported him to the police.
Jiang turned himself in on May 24 last year and was arrested on charges of fraud.
