Pudong trio imprisoned for credit card fraud

THREE people involved in a credit card fraud and guilty of stealing more than 50,000 yuan (US$7,895) through shopping and drawing cash from ATM were sentenced today by the Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People's Court.

The trio of one woman and two men received jail terms from three years and nine months to five years for credit card fraud, the court ruled.

Between last April and May, three convicts claimed to be the owners of a dozen expired credit cards and went to their neighborhood committee in Heqing Town, Pudong District for collective renewal.

They then called the real owners to get their personal identification, pretending to be bank employees. With stolen information, they activated the new cards and used them to buy jewelry and other luxury goods or draw cash from bank machines, the court heard.

Since the real cardholders would receive a text messages whenever a transaction is done, the convicts said one of them would call the victim as a bank employee to stall for time.

They were arrested on May 30 last year, the court said.
