Pudong truck driver steals company vehicles to pay gambling debts

A man who stole four container trucks and a semi-trailer parked in the city's Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone and sold them to pay his gambling debts was sentenced to 11 years in prison, the Pudong New Area People's Court said today.

The 35-year-old convict, surnamed Zhang, was also fined 30,000 yuan (US$4,720) by the court. And the buyer of the stolen trucks, surnamed Liu, was also punished with a suspended one-year sentence, the court ruled.

Prosecutors said Zhang, a Jiangsu Province native, stole four vehicles from a transportation company where he worked as a truck driver last year.

"I didn't use any tools. I opened the door with my hands and connected the wires of the electric starter to activate the engine," Zhang told the court.

Prosecutors said the five trucks were worth more than 243,000 yuan but Zhang sold them to Liu at very low prices. In one case, Zhang sold a container truck valued at 87,000 yuan for just 16,000 yuan and Liu sold it for 20,000 yuan to a recycling station as scarp metals.

The pair was caught by police on December 28 last year.
