Pudong will go green in a big way
THE Pudong New Area is to build a huge green space — bigger than the whole of Huangpu District. Most of the space will be devoted to gardens and farmland.
Planning had been approved by the city government, the Pudong New Area government said. No cost or completion date has yet been announced.
The ecological space will run along Dazhi River, sited between S2 Expressway and G1501 Ring Expressway, to the south of Huinan and Xuanqiao towns.
The proposed land will cover 2,630 hectares and will be sectioned into four parts — woodlands, peach farms, farmland and leisure. About 2,110 hectares are for “non-constructive uses.”
The woodland area, representing a semi-natural environment, will be more than three-quarters covered by trees, with water occupying much of the rest of the space.
The peach farm area will feature peaches of Datuan town known for their sweetness and juiciness. Once again, 75 percent of the area will be covered by trees and more than 20 percent covered by water.
The third section will be mainly used for agricultural purposes, with less than 15 percent covered by woodland, but more than 60 percent incorporating fields, with water again taking up 20 percent.
The final section will house leisure, entertainment, education and research and development industries. Hotels and nursing facilities for the aged will be set up in this section.
Compared with traditional parks, the diversity of the green space will provide more space for wild animals
Factories and polluters along Dazhi River will also be demolished. The total project will be developed in three phases. The first phase is expected to be complete in five years, according to the television station.
The city is expected to set up nine green spaces in suburban areas by 2040.
