Pudong’s bus drivers need to pass tests
BUS drivers in Pudong who fail traffic rule tests face being suspended.
Pudong Bus Transport Co. said yesterday that all its 7,000 drivers are required to take the police supervised, 25-question test, based on the city’s new traffic regulation to be implemented from March 25.
A score of under 90 percent would be considered a fail, and those who fail twice will face suspension, the company said.
“Traffic violations are still rampant among bus drivers although we have stepped up education and inspection in the past year,” said Wang Binfeng, an official from the company.
Wang said speeding, using mobile phones when driving, running through red lights were the most frequent traffic offenses committed by drivers, along with illegal lane changing and horn blowing.
“Where traffic accidents often take place, we will keep reminding our drivers to slow down when passing and give way to bikes and pedestrians on zebra crossings,” Wang said. “Drivers with bad track records of violations will be given special attention.”
The city’s new traffic regulation requires transport companies to educate their drivers on road safety at least once a month. Those failing to do so face warnings and sanctions.
