Putuo woman arrested after neighbor dies

A WOMAN has been arrested for causing her neighbor’s death after the two fought over a trivial matter, Putuo District Prosecutors Office said yesterday.
The suspect, a 43-year-old surnamed Zhou, was having a nap at home on May 9 and was woken up when her 60-year-old neighbor, surnamed Yao, slammed a door, according to prosecutors.
The two started arguing with Zhou spitting on Yao, prosecutors said. Eventually they started fighting in the doorway. Yao’s husband intervened, knocking down Zhou when he pushed the door, prosecutors said. Zhou then knocked over Yao, who fell and hit her head on the cement floor and lost consciousness, according to prosecutors. She was announced dead later in hospital due to functional brain failure.
Zhou allegedly told prosecutors she lost her glasses in the fight and couldn’t judge the distance between her and Yao when she fell. The procurator’s office said it believed Zhou harmed Yao intentionally, which had lead to her death.
A court date was not provided.
