Quack doctor punished for patient's massive bleeding

AN uncertified Shanghai doctor has been jailed for removing a contraceptive device from a woman and causing her massive bleeding, the Minhang District People's Court said yesterday.

The doctor surnamed Zhang conducted an unsuccessful surgery five years ago to take out an intrauterine device (IUD) from a 32-year-old woman surnamed Deng. The woman suffered massive bleeding and her life was saved by Shanghai No. 8 People's Hospital.

Zhang went into hiding after the incident and was caught by police last August. The Minhang court sentenced him to two years in prison and fined him 5,000 yuan (US$794).

The court said Zhang did not possess a license to perform birth control surgeries and she breached the law to operate on the patient. Zhang's family already paid Deng 63,000 yuan for compensation. Zhang was given a lighter sentence because Deng has pardoned her.

China has the largest number of IUD users in the world. A recent survey made by the Shanghai Population and Family Planning Commission reveals that about 52 percent of Shanghai women use IUD while 33 percent chose condoms. The survey polled 21,900 women aged between 15 and 49.

The commission said urban women prefer condoms while suburban women prefer IUD. Many suburban patients go to private clinics for birth control surgeries to save money.

Zhang ran a clinic in Meilong Town in Minhang District after coming to the city from Anhui Province. She rushed Deng to the hospital after the woman began to bleed unstoppably in December 2007. Later she disappeared to avoid punishment.
