Quality tests find fault with children’s sunglasses
SOME sunglasses for children have been found to hurt their eyes and also to affect their ability to distinguish traffic light colors.
The city’s consumer rights protection commission warned yesterday after testing 40 pairs of sunglasses for children priced from 32 yuan to 3,800 yuan (US$4.70 to US$560).
The commission found three samples failed tests with regards to traffic-signal recognition. The three brands involved were Miss Hamptons, Hindfield, and Zhihuibaobao.
“Transmittance to traffic signals, mainly green, yellow and red signal transmittance, is an important index indicating the safety of sunglasses, and it will directly affect children’s recognition of traffic lights when wearing sunglasses with substandard quality,” said Ye Jiayi, deputy director of the Shanghai Spectacles Quality Supervision and Inspection Station.
Another pair of child sunglasses, branded Balabala, was found to have a deviation of transmittance uniformity, which would potentially hurt users’ eyes, according to the commission.
The visible light transmittance of seven pairs of sunglasses, such as Teddy and Bertha brands, could not meet the claims stated on their labels, indicating they could not provide as much protection against the sun as they claimed or that visual sensitivity could be affected.
Fourteen pairs did not mark their category and classification.
“Many parents believe deep color lenses are better, but lenses with deep colors are not equal to good sunglasses because they can affect children’s sensitivity to light,” said Qiao Tong, director of ophthalmology with the Children’s Hospital of Shanghai.
“Long-time wearing of deep colored sunglasses will affect children’s development of eyeball and vision,” Qiao said. He advised choosing grey lenses for children.
