Raids on 鈥榖lack鈥 cabs bags 58, but problem remains
A CRACKDOWN on illegal taxi services outside Nanxiang Station on Metro Line 11 led to 58 people being punished in the first 10 months of the year, but the problem is far from being resolved, the Jiading District transport commission said yesterday.
The drivers had their licenses suspended for three months and were each fined 10,000 yuan (US$1,600), said transport official Ling Long.
The campaign was centered on the station, which sees about 50,000 commuters a day, as it had become a focal point for “black” taxis. As well as punishing the unlicensed drivers, the transport authority paid authorized cabbies a 3 yuan bonus for picking up fares at the station.
Despite the 10-month crackdown, a woman who lives near the station said the problem of unlicensed taxi services is far from being resolved.
“The number of black cabs has decreased, but (illegal taxi) motorcycles still gather outside the station, and there seems to be a demand,” said Dong Xiao.
“I never use them because I think it’s dangerous, but they are very popular with people who live a bit further away, and also at night when there are no buses running,” she said.
Ling admitted that the government still has a lot of work to do as it tries to eradicate the illicit trade.
“Unlicensed vehicles and motorcycles can still be seen during rush hour periods, so we will continue with our crackdown,” he said.
“We will also look at providing more bus services in the area to help reduce demand for the illegal cabs,” he said.
