Rail police keep an eye on banned items

SHANGHAI railway police said yesterday they had confiscated banned items from 818 passengers on Sunday — the first day when the new railway regulation came into effect.
Passengers taking trains in China can no longer carry kitchen knives, table knives, animals and “objects with strong smell” like stinking tofu and durian.
Police said they had confiscated 581 knives and about 300 lighters on Sunday.
Shanghai Hongqiao Railway police said eight passengers were found carrying animals on the train. Among them was a woman who tried to take a dog on board by tucking it inside her shirt and claiming to be pregnant.
The new regulation has also limited the amount of some objects that can be carried on the train now.
Among the measures introduced on Sunday are: ban on carrying mousse, hair jel, pesticide and air freshener exceeding 120 milliliters instead of the previous 600 milliliters.
Only two ordinary lighters will be allowed per passenger instead of five, and five match boxes instead of 20.
