Rapist arrested on fraud charges
A RAPIST has been arrested for allegedly defrauding more than 360,000 yuan (US$52,709) from steel traders by claiming he worked on an Expo-related project, prosecutors said yesterday.
The defendant surnamed Zha from Anhui Province found it difficult to find a job after serving four years' jail for rape, and decided to swindle people, Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate Prosecutors' Office said.
Seeing that World Expo construction was in full swing, Zha claimed he was in charge of buying materials for a non-existent Expo relocation project, and ordered more than 3,000 tons of steel and pipes from a trader surnamed Zheng.
Later, after signing contracts, Zha began to borrow money from Zhang on various pretexts, Zheng told prosecutors.
They alleged Zha also got a timber trader surnamed Chen to lend him 10,000 yuan but disappeared before fulfilling his side of the deal.
