Rats 鈥榓ble to pass on their drug addiction鈥
MALE rats can transmit drug addiction to their first and second generations of offspring, Shanghai scientists have discovered.
The finding — by a group of scientists from the Institute of Brain Science Fudan University — was published in the international journal Nature Communications on Tuesday.
The team led by Ma Lan, director of the institute, separated male rats into groups of addicts and non-addicts, based on their incentive motivation to seek cocaine and then let them mate with female rates that had never used cocaine.
A motivation to seek cocaine was clearly seen in the first and second generations of offspring.
The scientists’ research also suggested that rats that were highly motivated to seek a drug experience might cause a reduction in resistance to drug addiction in their descendants.
