鈥楻eading marathon鈥 puts book-lovers to the test
A “reading marathon” was held over the weekend to promote reading among the public.
A total of 160 people took part in the eight-hour Xuhui Walk and Read Marathon on Saturday. The event was part scavenger hunt, and part reading comprehension contest. It involved visits to downtown historic landmarks, as well as reading sessions at libraries in Xuhui, Jing’an and Huangpu districts.
The event coincides with the ongoing Shanghai Book Fair, and aims to strengthen reading habits among the public, said Fang Yunfang, director of the Xuhui Library, which organized the event.
The annual reading marathon was initiated in Xuhui last year, when it attracted some 100 readers.
During Saturday’s contest, participants were divided into 32 teams, who visited different landmarks where they were quizzed on a designated text.
Participants went to over a dozen historic sites, such as the Site of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the Shanghai Confucian Temple, and popular downtown bookstores.
They have to read through a popular book about Karl Marx quickly to answer questions at each of the sites during the route.
“I seldom read books on such political topics, but after reading it for the competition, I felt it was quite interesting,” said Ma Tianyu, one of the participants.
During the reading marathon in the afternoon, participants gathered at the Zhongshuge Bookstore in Xuhui to read a new book about the city’s historic Zhaojiabang River within three hours. Most of the participants finished the reading and a comprehension test, plus a 200-word review to evaluate the book.
