Record electricity use as city swelters

SHANGHAI’S power supplier yesterday announced the city’s electricity usage set a new record of 29,820 megawatts on Monday, as the city sweltered.
But the city’s power supply is still sufficient as the State Grid has allowed for 12,000 megawatts of electricity generated in neighboring provinces to be used to support Shanghai, said the Shanghai Electric Power Co.
The company has some 2,000 repair staff and 400 vehicles on standby to deal with power outages.
Residents can dial the 24-hour hotline 95598 or the city’s hotline 12345 to report any power failure.
Repair staff have had to deal with some 2,300 power failure cases every day since July 26, when the high temperatures began, a press officer told Shanghai Daily.
The company asked local office buildings and department stores to turn off some of their air conditioners at peak hours to ensure supplies to local residents.
Office buildings are also monitored on whether the temperature in the building is kept over 26 degrees Celsius to save power.
If power usage keeps climbing, the city will launch power conservation plans, when workshops in some chemical plants and steel mills will work only during off-peak hours.
Temperatures are set to fall by the weekend.
