Record numbers expected on railways

SHANGHAI railway authority expects newly opened routes will bring record passenger numbers during the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays.
Bullet trains have been put into service this year along new routes in the Yangtze River Delta region, including Nanjing-Anqing, Jinhua-Wenzhou and Nanjing-Qidong railways.
The new Zhengzhou-Xuzhou high-speed railway will also start service this weekend. According to Shanghai Railway Bureau, which operates railways in Shanghai and neighboring Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Anhui provinces, the new routes will help to attract more passengers during the two holidays.
The Mid-Autumn Festival holiday runs from next Thursday to September 17, with Thursday expected to be the peak traveling day. More than eight million passengers from the Yangtze Delta region are expected to take train rides from September 15-17 — a 27 percent increase compared with the same period last year, said the bureau.
The National Day holiday falls in the first week of October, with October 1 the festive day. The bureau expects to carry a record 21 million passengers from September 28 to October 7, a 9.3 percent increase on the period last year. October 1 will be the travel peak with some 2.85 million passengers expected.
To handle the increased demand, the bureau will add dozens of extra trains during the two holidays, including from Shanghai to popular destinations like Hangzhou, Hefei, Xuzhou, Bengbu and Beijing.
Free Wi-Fi will also be provided in some major stations like Shanghai Hongqiao, Hangzhou East, Hefei South and Xuzhou East stations, said the bureau.
