Recycler's extortion punished
A recycling station boss was sentenced to 26 months in prison with a 30-month reprieve for blackmailing a client who tried to sell his impure waste copper, the Qingpu District People's Court said yesterday.
The 27-year-old convict, surnamed Wang, discovered the waste copper was impure when a man surnamed Zhao came to sell his goods at Wang's recycling station in Xujing Town in Qingpu District last May 2.
After being refused by Wang, Zhao went to another recycling station in a nearby village to sell his copper but the station again belonged to Wang. Wang demanded that Zhao pay him 50,000 yuan (US$7,940) or he would report him to the police for selling counterfeit goods.
The court said Wang and his accomplices covered Zhao with clothes over his head and left him stranded in a car, refusing to release him until his wife handed 50,000 cash to Wang.
The convict turned himself in on June 27. Wang was fined 10,000 yuan and was ordered to return the ransom to Zhao.
