Register for the half marathon

LACE up your running shoes.

Registration for the 2016 Shanghai International Half Marathon will start at 9am today, and places will be assigned through a draw, the organizers announced yesterday.

The April 17 event will feature 8,500 runners in the 21-kilometer half marathon and another 3,500 female runners in the 8-mile (12.87km) women’s run.

Applicants can provide personal information through the event’s official website (www.shang-ma.com) or via smartphone applications. Registration will close at 5pm on March 21, and the results of the draw will be announced at 2pm on March 22.

Those winning places must pay the fee by March 24. The entrance fee for the half marathon is 160 yuan (US$24.6), and 100 yuan for the women’s 8-mile.

Both races will start at the Oriental Pearl TV Tower in Pudong at 7am. The routes cover the Lujiazui area, Shibo Avenue, Yaolong Road, Qiantan, and the finish line will be at the Oriental Sports Center.

The organizers have invited elite runners, including Kenya’s Abraham Cheroben, to take part in the event.

A US$10,000 prize has been set for both the men’s and women’s half-marathon winners.

The first 200 men and 200 women who finish will also be awarded with places in the 2016 Shanghai International Marathon, which will be held in November.

“We want to build the annual Shanghai International Marathon and Half Marathon into iconic competitions for the city,” said Zhou Jin, general manager of organizer Shanghai East Best Lansheng Event Management Co. “The total places for this year’s half marathon and women’s run has been increased from last year’s 5,000 to 12,000, and better services are promised.”

Official supply stations will be set up at the 10km, 14.5km and 18.5km points, and there will be water stations every five kilometers along the route.

There will be shower facilities available for the first 500 runners to finish.
