Relatives jailed for hospital assault

THREE members of the same family were sent to prison yesterday for damaging hospital facilities, and attacking a police officer and a security guard.

The violent rampage happened on April 2 at the Pudong Maternity and Infant Hospital, after relatives of a woman who had lost her newborn there failed to agree a compensation deal with its management.

The ringleader of the gang was a man called Xu who was sentenced to a year in prison for instigating the violent outburst. Another relative, surnamed Wang, was sentenced to 10 months, while Xu’s unnamed daughter was given an 8-month term, the Pudong New Area People’s Court said.

On March 27, Xu was told that his daughter-in-law, surnamed Hou, had lost her unborn baby while a patient at the hospital.

Hospital authorities said they would hold a mediation session with him and his family at a later date.

On April 2, Xu, his son, daughter and several other relatives attended the session, but the two sides failed to reach consensus.

In a rage, Wang attacked a security guard with a water bottle, causing bruises to the victim’s face. Meanwhile, Xu’s daughter overturned the meeting table and pulled the hair of a woman police officer, while Xu kicked the officer in the leg.

Xu’s daughter told the court that her parents had told her to cause trouble if the hospital didn’t agree to their demands.

Meanwhile, the Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate Prosecutors’ Office recently approved the arrest of a man who threatened and attacked medical staff in 2011, following a dispute over his sick infant son.
